MARK GREGORY LOPEZ

Born Mexican-American and raised Catholic in the seaside city of Corpus Christi, Texas, a lot of my work (particularly my poetry) dives into what that means, both in terms of place and in terms of lineage.

As far as work experience, I wrote for my college paper, The Daily Texan, for almost three years, making it on to permanent staff before graduating in spring of 2011. Since then, I've copy edited and was a staff writer for The Weekly Alibi in Albuquerque, N.M., from 2012 to 2015. Then, making the move back to Texas, I was a Proofreader for GateHouse Media, proofing pages for The Dallas Morning News and The Columbus Dispatch, among other print publications. Then I made the move to being a content subject matter expert for Accenture until 2018, before diving back into poetry.

Since fall 2018, I've been a student in the graduate MFA Creative Writing program at Columbia University, concentrating on poetry. I'm currently at work finishing my first collection of poetry, titled Josefa, which deals with the South Texas Mexican experience through the lens of mourning lost relatives.
